Dear subscribers,

I’m starting a feature where I share what’s left on the cutting room floor from my reporting. Reporting is kind of like an iceberg: what you read is undergirded by a lot of observations that don’t make it into print. This feature will be for paid subscribers only. The first one will be about discussions about the United States and Ukraine at this year’s Munich Security Conference.

As an American, I fielded a lot of questions about how Americans look at Europe. To me, the dynamics have seemed like an unequal, and now possibly abusive, marriage, where, after 80 years, the more powerful partner is taking advantage of the weaker one.
